Yarn dyeing, crocheting and Alpacas! Join us for Yarn Dyeing Simplified" with Rhonda Seybert.  Participants can either watch or join in and dye their own mini alpaca skein! Humming Desert Alpacas will also have "Easy Crochet Bowl" demos presented by Kimberly Washburn. Farm tours are given all day. Feed and interact with the alpacas that provide the fleece for our products!

Children's Activity Area Projects using raw alpaca fleece. Demonstrations on how to skirt an alpaca blanket in preparation for washing and carding. Two spinning wheels will be available to spinners who would like to spin roving from the Humming Desert Alpacas herd. Light refreshments provided.

  Inkle Weaving and Spinning Try your hand at Inkle Weaving! Annie, an inkle weaver with 40+ years of experience will be working at her loom during the Crawl and invites visitors to sit down with her and try out the Guest Loom. Becky Arnold will be spinning at her wheel and show visitors how to she creates award-winning yarns.

Wide Sky Ranch, Santa Fe Thread

Learn all there is to know on Alpacas: Wide Sky Ranch will be taking guests for a tour of the alpaca ranch. Learn about the origins of alpacas, how we care for them daily, and how we monitor their health on our herd health days, compete is shows, the unique qualities of their fleece, and most of all, meet our herd out in the pastures.  Also we will be demonstrating our fleece picker and our electric carder. We will also have a table where they can color alpaca worksheets for children.

Skirting, Spinning, Washing: We will skirt a fleece blanket in preparation for processing an alpaca show. For spinners, this is an opportunity to learn why careful skirting yields improved fleece to spin. We will also show one of the correct ways to wash raw fleece and how to dry it.

From Saltillo to Taos - The Saltillo Serape - Legend, Origins and Influences: Presentation by Chris Ferguson on the legendary Saltillo serape; its origins, context, and profound influence upon regional Hispanic and Navajo weaving traditions in 19th century New Mexico. An outstanding selection of classic period Saltillo serapes, along with Saltillo influenced New Mexican "Rio Grande" blankets, and historical Navajo textiles will be present to illustrate the visual impact and enduring beauty that have become indelibly synonymous with the southwest. Live Needle Felting Demonstrations with artist Judy Chapman will demonstrate needle felting figures. Judy is well known as a talented artist and will have some of her works for sale.
